TravelTrails

TravelTrails is a digital humanities database dedicated to gathering, organizing, and highlighting the historical information contained in travel literature produced by European travelers to the Eastern Mediterranean from the 16th century until 1830. Drawing on the rich collections of the Gennadius Library and the Historical Library of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, the project transforms rare printed sources into a structured, research-ready digital dataset.

For this project, we were responsible for the full technical architecture and implementation of the platform. We restructured the original database into a scalable, web-based research environment, designing the data model to support geographical indexing, thematic categorization, and advanced search capabilities. The system enables precise retrieval of information at page level, directly linking structured metadata to digitized source material.

We developed a robust backend infrastructure to ensure performance, remote accessibility, and long-term sustainability, while implementing a user-friendly interface that allows researchers to navigate complex historical data with ease. The platform integrates structured metadata, full-text PDF access, and advanced filtering mechanisms aligned with contemporary digital humanities standards.

The result is a sustainable, extensible research infrastructure that enhances scholarly access to early modern travel literature and was recognized with the Best Digital Humanities Dataset Award at the Digital Humanities Awards in 2022.
