Overview
For the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, we designed and developed a custom digital platform that documents and maps incunabula (15th-century printed books) preserved in Greek libraries. The project consolidates data from the international Material Evidence in Incunabula (MEI) database, presenting for the first time a comprehensive visualization of the geographical dispersion of these rare editions across Greece.
We built both the frontend and backend infrastructure, including a structured database architecture capable of managing detailed bibliographic records and material evidence such as bindings, marginalia, ownership marks, and commercial annotations. The platform transforms complex scholarly data into an intuitive, interactive map-based experience accessible to researchers worldwide.
Recognized internationally, the project received the Best Digital Humanities Data Visualization award at the Digital Humanities Awards, highlighting its impact in bridging historical scholarship with innovative digital design.
The result is a scalable digital research tool that supports the study of book circulation, trade networks, readership identity, and the economic and cultural history of early printing in Greece.
