Aegaeum Nostrum

Aegaeum Nostrum is a large-scale work in progress digital platform dedicated to documenting and presenting the historical and cultural legacy of the Aegean Sea — a region with over 3,000 years of contributions to letters, sciences, and the arts.

We were responsible for the full technical architecture and implementation of the platform, developing the backend infrastructure in Laravel and the dynamic frontend in React, ensuring scalability, performance, and seamless interaction across complex datasets.

At the core of the application lies an interactive Mediterranean map featuring more than 300 cities linked to over 3,000 ancient scholars, writers, and artists. Users can explore each location through detailed historical narratives, archaeological references, visual documentation, and biographical records — creating a structured and immersive research experience.

The platform integrates a sophisticated, interconnected database system including:

– Archive of Cities (500+ locations)
– Archive of Writers & Artists (4,000+ figures)
– Thesaurus of Names (6,000+ entries)
– Archive of Works tracing ancient texts and their printed transmission
– 60,000+ historical images (manuscripts, sculptures, artifacts)

Through advanced data relationships and thematic navigation, the platform enables deep exploration of the intellectual networks that shaped Western civilization — from Homer and Aristotle to Hippocrates and Herodotus.
